My friend Rich Mullins died 15 years ago today.
Still makes me mad that he (in all likelihood) didn’t wear a seatbelt that day. I was with him in that very same Jeep a few weeks prior to the accident, when we played hooky, just the two of us, speeding away from the opening act before his concert at a local megachurch here in Wisconsin, outside Milwaukee. He hated megachurches. He loved frozen custard. We left the megachurch and went to get frozen custard… him with no shoes and no seatbelt, me with both. I’m still here. He’s not, and that makes me sad to this day.
If the world’s Christians were more like Rich and less like megachurches, the world would be a much better place. There’s no one I’ve ever met who glowed brighter with a pure, unadulterated, agenda-free, unabashed love for his fellow human beings like Rich. Simply an awesome person. I’m happy I had the chance to know him, and so happy he challenged the beliefs of my childhood without regard for dogma. He’d laugh his ass off today if he knew what came of that conversation. :)
This nonbeliever misses you something fierce, dude.
