Sam Harris: A New Year's Resolution for the Rich →
kateoplis: While the United States has suffered the worst recession in living memory, I find that I have very few financial concerns. Many of my friends are in the same position: Most of us attended private schools and good universities, and we will be able to provide these same opportunities to our own children. No one in my immediate circle has a family member serving in Afghanistan or Iraq....

Wisconsin Awards $25,000 to Man Wrongly Imprisoned... →
sds: This sort of thing is exactly why, as I’ve noted before, I am increasingly opposed to the death penalty on practical grounds even while I support it philosophically. 1. me, too. 2. that number seems about two or three zeroes short. 25k?!?!

So my next question would be for good (affordable as well) studio monitors. I currently have the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 pair but a lightening storm (and my ignorance of not unplugging them) has created a nice buzzing noise so I think it's time for a new...

two misused words
leftyjenkins: the words “terrorist” and “hero” are thrown around all the time, with no regard to their meanings.  Julian Assange is not a terrorist. suicide bombers are terrorists. fundamentalists who murder doctors in their churches are terrorists. applying the term to an enemy or an opponent cheapens the word and makes it meaningless. similarly, the Chilean miners are not heroes. the first...

dachesterfrench: Another article by William Deresiewicz about how universities should exist to make minds, not careers (via The American Scholar) I pretty much agree with his analysis of elite universities, although there are some promising signs about the next generation of graduates: an increasing awareness of the rest of the world, for instance.
